In the ham radio world, an "Elmer" is an experienced operator who mentors newer "hams." "Elmering" refers to the process of providing this mentorship.

EI, also known as Extreme Ironing, is a competitive sport in which individuals iron articles of clothing in remote or challenging locations, such as mountain tops or while surfing.

Frank Borman, Apollo 8 astronaut and member of the Rotary Club of Space Center Houston, carried a club flag on his orbit around the moon.

In 101 words or fewer, tell us the story of a niche hobby or special interest. Perhaps it's a totally made-up obsession or a club you're already a member of. A magical society? Chess club? We'll leave that up to you. Entry is free. The creator of the most compelling story wins a free Gotham class of their choosing.

Some examples:

The nurseryman, our leader, believed that a garden should be beautiful even in the decay of winter. We flocked to him, our annuals a bust, eager for the wisdom of perennials. “We prize color so much we forget about structure.” We nodded solemnly, copying his words verbatim in our field books. “A garden is wildness contained.” Fingers feathered spikelets of grass stalk, showing us we would grow tall. Together, we could seamlessly blend into each other like brush. Nature herself was the ultimate guide (after the nurseryman). “Let the winds direct you,” he said, scattering us before bringing us back together.

Every bad report card, government-issued bill, and note from an ex, Jen’s folded. It’s good to tuck away fears in the folds, she says. More paper trails should be reincarnated as origami. That D in Calculus? A swan. The IRS notice demanding more money? A jumping frog! And what’s more original than John’s proclamation he loves her to the moon and back? Literally anything! Paper crane, lotus–hell, even a hat! That lined page deserves a life beyond a poorly written love letter. She smooths the edges, creases the cliches so they collapse and transform into… a dragon. Much better.
